Setting up TidyDNS on your Computer or Router

Windows Setup

Windows

The easiest way to use TidyDNS with Windows is to download the utility, which will make the necessary changes for you.

To manually change your DNS to TidyDNS:

  1. Open the Control Panel from your Start menu.
  2. Click Network Connections and choose your current connection.
  3. On the General tab of the Connection Status screen, clickProperties.
  4. On the General tab of Connection Properties, scroll down and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click Properties.
  5. On the General tab of Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, select Use the following DNS server addresses, then enter the Primary DNS server as 18.40.157.28 and Secondary DNS server as 156.154.71.22
  6. Click OK until each window is closed. You are now using TidyDNS.
  7. Test your new settings →

To disable: Follow the above instructions. On step five, select Obtain DNS server address automatically on the last screen (or replace our TidyDNS addresses with your recursive resolver IPs).

OS X Setup

Mac
  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click Network.
  3. Choose your current network adapter, and click Advanced.
  4. On the DNS tab, enter the two addresses 188.40.157.28 and 156.154.71.22
  5. Test your new settings →

To disable: Follow the above instructions. On step four, remove the TidyDNS Servers addresses (or replace them with your recursive resolver IPs).

Linux Setup

LinuxStatic Interface

In most Unix operating systems, your DNS settings are configured in /etc/resolv.conf. To use Internet Guide:

  1. Open /etc/resolv.conf in any text editor.
  2. Comment out any nameserver or search lines with #.
  3. Add the following two lines:
    nameserver 188.40.157.19
    nameserver  156.154.71.22
  4. Save the file and exit the editor.
  5. Test your new settings →

To disable: Simply remove our TidyDNS nameserver lines from resolv.conf and uncomment the previous settings.

DHCP Interface (dhclient)

Many popular distributions use dhclient if your interface is set to DHCP. To use TidyDNS with dhclient:

  1. Open dhclient.conf, typically located at /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf, in any text editor.
  2. Uncomment or add the following line:
    prepend domain-name-servers 188.40.157.19,154.156.71.22;
  3. Restart your network interface. If you are using NetworkManager, you can do this by clicking on the icon and selecting your interface to activate the changes.

To disable: Comment out or remove the line above.

Router Setup

In most cases, DHCP-enabled devices in your network will retrieve DNS settings automatically from your router; by configuring your router to use TidyDNS, these devices will use TidyDNS as well.

The exact method of configuring static DNS settings varies widely from router to router, but usually appears under the DHCP configuration section. For example, under Basic Setup - Network Address Server Settings (DHCP) in the Linksys WRT54G, there are three entries for Static DNS. Entering the first DNS server as, 188.40.157.19 and the second DNS server as 156.154.71.22, will cause the router and all DHCP devices in your network to query TidyDNS for their DNS needs

Disclaimer : Secondary DNS server 154.156.71.22 is powered by COMODO
